Surtruck has once again offset its emissions, having just received the certificate from the Ministry of Ecological Transition for the year 2022. This is the 9th consecutive year that Surtruck has calculated its carbon footprint and the second year that it has offset it. But there is an important difference, as Surtruck’s Commercial Director of Road Cleaning, Antonio Venegas, explains. “Last year we compensated, on the national side, with a reforestation project in Galicia. We thought it was interesting, but we are an Andalusian company and we wanted the compensation for our emissions to stay in our region. That’s why we set it as a challenge for this year, and we are happy that we have achieved it,” he says.
The project finally chosen for 2022 has been Finca El Vinagre, which belongs to the company Ibereucaliptos. Located in the province of Huelva, the initiative is the result of the reforestation of a fire that three years ago destroyed 250 hectares, leaving them completely burnt. The area was razed to the ground and in order to recover it, eucalyptus trees and native species have been planted. The forestry director of Ibereucaliptos, Jorge Campos Gil, showed Surtruck the reforested area “so that they can see the importance of this type of initiative, which helps us to improve our environment considerably. With the particularity that it is only a few kilometres away from where they carry out their activity”.
The company in charge of processing all of Surtruck’s carbon footprint and its compensation has once again been Ecoterrae. The company’s Sustainability and Climate Change consultant, María José Montes Vega, explained that in addition to the initiative chosen in Andalusia, 46 tonnes of CO2 will also be offset in an international project in Hazira (India). Their contribution will help to build a combined cycle power plant based on natural gas through a special purpose vehicle Bhander Power Limited (BPL). Another initiative that will also improve the environment of a planet that Surtruck strives, year after year, to preserve.
